The board-certified physicians at the Hemorrhoid Center of Excellence are devoted to helping patients with colorectal problems both locally and around the globe through their humanitarian efforts. As a part of this dedication, the Center supports The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS). A nonprofit organization comprised of over 2,800 members, ASCRS strives to help people suffering from colorectal conditions while improving overall recognition of these diseases.
Goals of the ASCRS
The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons seeks to help individuals suffering from colorectal issues in the following ways:
Research
Having raised over $5 million, The Research Foundation of the ASCRS provides grants for members seeking to make advancements in the field of colorectal surgery.
Education
Widely regarded as the authority on colorectal issues, The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons believes that educating people about these serious conditions is key to ensuring early recognition and treatment. One of its goals is to encourage people to be screened for colon cancer and other diseases.
Patient Care
The members of the ASCRS believe that patients suffering from diseases of the colon, rectum and anus deserve the highest quality care and strive continuously to achieve this goal through their work and professionalism.

Volunteering Abroad
Some of La Peer’s top surgeons, including the Hemorrhoid Surgery Center of Excellence’s Medical Director, Gary Hoffman, MD, participated in an annual trip to Guatemala in April, 2013. It was a mission to treat medical problems in one of Guatemala’s rural indigenous areas, in which the medical team performed more than 100 surgeries for those who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it.
The mission was organized by HELPS International, a nonprofit organization who recruits volunteers to work in impoverished areas of Central and Latin America. Many members of La Peer Health Systems travel with this mission annually, committed to helping underprivileged populations with medical needs.
