In general there are two types of hemorrhoids. These are called internal and external hemorrhoids. Internal hemorrhoids are veins inside the anus that become swollen and enlarged. External hemorrhoids are swollen and enlarged veins on the outside of the anus. Both types of hemorrhoids can be caused by a number of things. Chief among these are:
- Chronic constipation
- Chronic diarrhea
- Sitting for too long on the toilet
- Straining on the toilet
- Liver disease
Once your hemorrhoids have been diagnosed, doctors will help you determine the type of treatment you’ll require. While most patients with hemorrhoids will heal within a few days or with nonsurgical treatment such as creams, some patients with more severe or chronic hemorrhoids will require surgical intervention.

Types of Hemorrhoid Treatment
There are a number of operative treatments available for patients who suffer from serious or chronic hemorrhoids. Some of the most common include:
- Hemorrhoid Banding – a procedure in which a rubber band is wrapped around the hemorrhoid in order to cut off blood supply and cause it to wither
- Traditional Hemorrhoidectomy – a surgical procedure in which the hemorrhoid is cut out and the remaining area sewn closed
- Stapled hemorrhoidectomy – a surgical procedure that is similar to a traditional hemorrhoidectomy in which the hemorrhoid is cut out and the remaining area stapled closed, cutting off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid
